Reopening Guidelines: Salon Responsibilities

In Part 1 of this series, we looked at changes to expectations and requirements for clients. In this post, we will look at what is being required of salons. In the next post, we will look at the additional components we are setting for our salon.

Many of the requirements for salons are around posting notices of procedures and worker rights. We must post a range of notices about safety and mandates. You will be seeing a lot more information posted up. We will also be keeping a log of visits, to assist in contact tracing, should that become necessary.

There are new, stringent requirements around PPE. Some of the items, like gloves and mask, are ones we’ve been doing even prior to this situation. Now, salons are required to use many items during services, including N95, R95, or P95, eye protection, a gown or cape for the technician, to be changed after each client, and disposable gloves. Additionally, cloth masks must be worn any time the R/N/P95 is not used and gloves are to be worn at all times. Look forward to some very stylish face shields.

We will continue to frequently wash our hands, including always between clients and after any cleaning. We will also be doing frequent, expanded sanitizing and disinfecting in order to keep all high touch surfaces as clean as possible.

Technicians will be screened at start of each shift for COVID-19 symptoms, including a temperature check, and stay home or leave if they are experiencing symptoms, including a temperature over 100.4. Technicians must stay home if they have been exposed to someone known to have COVID-19.

As we open the salon into our modified Phase 1, we will all be required to maintain a maximum of 25% capacity or one technician and client, whichever is higher. In our space, this will mean one technician and one client at a time. Please remember, we will not be allowed to accommodate any additional folks. We will also not be able to let any clients wait in the salon, either before or after their appointments.

We are expected to all keep chatting to an absolute minimum, as talking has been shown to increase risk of spreading COVID-19. We will making an effort to limit talk to consultation and educational points.

Everyone will keep a minimum of 6’ distance from one another unless it is necessary for the service to be closer. This will mean a more distant checkout on a touch-less or minimum contact checkout system.

All porous surfaces, including fabric chairs or couches and magazines are to be removed from salons or blocked from use.

In the next part of this series, we will look at additional measures our salon will be taking to keep everyone as safe as possible.
